R&P: Let's decide — What are the best songs of 2009 (Round 1 – Part 15)?

May 22nd, 2010

The First Annual Rock & Pop Best Song Competition (2009 Edition).
Part 15 of the first round. More to come, and you don’t have to have voted in previous parts to get started here.
Guest Commentary by R&P’s own David.

MATCH UP 1
Phoenix – "Lisztomania"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BJDNw7o6so
Though active since the late 1990s, French alternative band Phoenix did not become international superstars until 2009. This colorful, energetic single helped them achieve the feat. It shares its title with a 1975 musical starring Roger Daltrey as Hungarian composer Franz Liszt (and, of course, featuring Ringo Starr as the Pope).
VERSUS
Wilco – "Bull Black Nova"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pMJpLEXrT4
"Would you be interested in going to a Wilco concert with me?"
"Definitely! I love Wilco"
"So I guess we WILCO to the show together!"
"…not anymore"
Boisterous French synth pop not for you? Perhaps this sinister song from Chicago’s enduring and influential Wilco is. Found on their well-received self-titled album, the song’s lyrics are told from the perspective of a man who has murdered his significant other.

MATCH UP 2
Kid Cudi – "Pursuit of Happiness (Nightmare)" [feat. MGMT and Ratatat]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xzU9Qqdqww
Kanye West’s quirky, stylish protégé collaborates with indie dance duos MGMT and Ratatat on this song from his debut album. Cudi has been praised by critics as representing "a promising new phase in the genre’s evolution." (Entertainment Weekly)
VERSUS
Mos Def – "Life in Marvelous Times"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2ZrVS5yNdo
The lead single from The Ecstatic, celebrated by critics and fans as a return to form for the hip hop icon and actor after the disappointing sales and poor reviews which befell his last album. The rousing song is a survey of his life and career and society at large.

MATCH UP 3
Porcupine Tree – "I Drive the Hearse"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bj2pWB2S_Jk
The fourteenth and final part of a 55-minute song cycle by the English progressive metal band, the aim of which is to "humanize the detached media reportage" (Steven Wilson) of violent crimes and disasters.
VERSUS
Wavves – "So Bored"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PF9Tu35-pBo
Hailed as the catchiest cut from the lo-fi/noise pop/surf band’s sophmore album. Lead singer Nathan Williams made headlines when he, high on ecstasy and Valium, fought his drummer and crudely insulted the crowd at the Barcelona Primavera Sound Festival. Their European tour was subsequently canceled.

MATCH UP 4
Backstreet Boys – "Shattered"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YI_DVkCysFA
The penultimate song from the teen pop sensations-turned-adult contemporary stalwarts’ most recent album, This Is Us.
VERSUS
Diddy & Dirty Money – "Love Come Down"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=au7W8tbSFtU
His own music has never seemed to be the entrepreneur and fashion designer’s top priority. This single’s failure to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 perhaps suggests he should try harder.

MATCH UP 5
Three Days Grace – "Break"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4VCpTZye10
Blame Canada. The lead single from the Canadian band’s third album. Bassist Brad Walst explained the song’s theme is "breaking away from bad influences." In case you couldn’t tell from the mega-earnest, angsty chorus.
VERSUS
Thousand Foot Krutch – "Fire It Up"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOJee120Po8
Blame Canada, again. Here’s a mouthful: Canadian Christian nü-metal. This is the third single from their fifth album, Welcome to the Masquerade. As featured in the trailer for one of the year’s worst films, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

You, the community here at Yahoo! Answers, nominated 350+ songs, your favorites of the year, to face-off in head-to-head battles, tournament style, to determine the best songs of this calendar year.

I ask that you listen to all of the songs… don’t vote on name alone. Listen to them, weigh them, and then choose with reason, which song is the better of the two in the given match ups.
Star it, and try to get as many voters to this thing as you can.
All comments are meant to be in good humor.

If you have any trouble with any links, or any of them are broken — let me know, and I’ll fix them ASAP. Thanks.

So, THE QUESTION: which songs do you subjectively prefer of each these match ups (even if it’s only the lesser of two evils in your eyes)?

If you had fire for oil and blood for money HMMMM whacha doin boy with alll that damn LIQOUR THAN?

Eminem

Welcome to the Stagestars.net – Eminem section. Find his biography and discography here, as well as reviews and lyrics of his albums. Also check out the Eminem pictures.

And last, but not least, don’t forget to exchange thoughts with other Eminem fans in our Forum.

Biography

In a few short months, Eminem has gone from being one of the most heralded emcees in independent hip-hop to one of the most provocative, controversial rappers in contemporary pop music. The overnight success of his debut album, The Slim Shady LP, literally rocked the rap world, making him one of the biggest music success stories of 1999. But Eminem is more than the latest rap artist to blow up. He’s spent the last several years paying his dues, and his lyrics, which cover topics such as poverty and single parenthood, reflect a rough upbringing. His unlikely acceptance by the pop mainstream has made some wonder how his popularity will affect the future of hip-hop music.
Before he had the world singing along to "My Name Is …," he was Marshall Mathers, a poor kid growing up in Warren, Mich. "It’s like the real, stereotypical, trailer park, white trash," Eminem told Rap Pages earlier this year. As a child, he and his mother moved constantly, staying at relatives’ homes in places as disparate as Warren and Kansas City, Mo. As a result

Can you help me with Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, and the Beatles? PLEASE?

May 20th, 2010

Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, and the Beatles are considered musical legends today. To be a legend, your career has to have a profound impact on music that comes after you. Your career doesn’t have to last forever, but you must do something in a new way or better than everyone else who came before you. These legends are known certainly for their music, but fans also find them appealing for their personalities — how they danced, wore their hair, or spoke out about politics. For many reasons, these musicians left their mark on music history.

Technology also affects the kind of music a musician produces and how it is advertised and distributed to the public. Many people today have more advanced recording technologies in their basement or garage than the Beatles ever had! And the Beatles certainly didn’t have the benefit of online music sharing when they were rising to fame.

Think about some present-day musicians that you enjoy listening to, and answer the following questions:

1. Which contemporary musician(s) do you think have what it takes to become truly legendary? Or do you think that none of today’s musicians have what it takes?

2. What is it about the musician(s) you just named that will have a profound impact on music history? If you said that none of today’s musicians are likely to become legends, explain what they are lacking.

3. Think about the kinds of technology that affect the music industry today, such as music video production, online music sharing, electronic instruments, amplification, etc. Choose one form of technology and describe how it has affected the creation and/or distribution of recorded music today.

Can A HUGE Baseball EXPERT Answer This Question?

May 19th, 2010

Baseball Fans,

I’m trying to come up with a card game where the likelihood of various base-ball events occuring per plate-appearance, reflect the ACTUAL likelihoods of present-day baseball as much as possible.

I say present day because I know 100 years ago, a home run was far less likely, and a steal was far more likely, than today, for example.

So for you baseball experts, can you please respond with the contemporary likelihoods of these events occuring, per 100 plate appearences….

- a single

- a double

- a triple

- a home run

- a strike-out

- a walk

- a hit batter

- a fielding out (aka- groundouts, popouts, etc combined)

Also, how many times per game on average, do the following occur…

- a double play

- a triple play (i realize this one will be fractionally small)

- a steal

- a pickoff

- wild pitches

Next, what’s the average runs per team in a game?

Finally, what percent of pitches are strikes vs balls?

How to make my donnie darko film review better?

May 17th, 2010

Donnie Darko Film Review
First time writer Richard Kelly (who wrote and directed) released his premier film Donnie Darko in October 2002, shot in less than 30 days with a budget of 4.5 million. This unexpected masterpiece comes from a rare place. Starring Patrick Swayze (Ghost) and Jake Gyllenhaal (Jarhead) this bizarre and eventful film will stay with you long after the end credits have rolled. Presenting an eclectic score of music including Echo And The Bunnymen and Joy division but most memorably Gary Jules version of Mad World. This use of contemporary music adds to the overall feeling of surreal seclusion.
The difficult to follow plot is not one to be summed up lightly, as the use of ambiguity is enunciated throughout the film. The movie is more to be watched in your own perspective leaving you to make up your own thoughts and opinions. This key plot feature allows it to be watched over and over again by casual film fans, and movie fanboys alike.
During the presidential election of 1988, a teenager named Donnie Darko sleepwalks out of his house one night, and sees a giant, demonic-looking rabbit named Frank, who tells him the world will end in 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, and 12 seconds. He returns home the next morning to find that a jet engine has crashed through his bedroom. As he tries to figure out why he survived and tries to deal with people in his town, like the school bully, his conservative health teacher, and a self-help guru, Frank continues to turn up in Donnie’s mind, causing him to commit acts of vandalism and worse.
Jake Gyllenhaal plays the main role superbly; his natural personality makes Donnie feel believable and relatable. Donnies skewed version of reality is challenged by his parents and teachers who try and simplify everything into extremes, such as Love and Fear, Right and Wrong, and reality and fantasy. The likes of Maggie Gyllenhaal who plays Donnies sister in the film and for that matter in reality add a great sibling rivalry to the film which makes way for a lighter humorous side. The depth of story and emotion will give you many sensations throughout watching mainly, Greif and Happiness this mixture of emotion is in different ratios for whoever watches it but whichever way you watch it you can’t help love the amazingly realistic characters.

Ok here is my film review, bad i know but i dont know how to jazz it up its one page and has to be about a whole other page if anyone could either do some for me like write something out or even sugestions im not talking grammer and puncuation im talking bout how to mkae it longer. 10 points to best answer and my eternal gratitude!!! :)

I'm looking for some contemporary female groups reminiscent of the girl groups of the 1960's. Are there any?

May 14th, 2010

I am a big fan of girl groups from the 1960’s, particularly those produced by Phil Spector using his "Wall of Sound" technique. I know that Amy Winehouse is clearly influenced by this genre but I’m not finding any groups that are similar. I am NOT interested in what we now refer to as "girl groups" (the Pussycat Dolls, Spice Girls, Destiny’s Child, etc.) Can anyone suggest any groups?

Baseball, steroids, boxing and Manny Pacquiao. A tale of proof, speculation and accusations.?

May 11th, 2010

"When Baseball players used steroids it was so obvious why cant manny fans see this?
the guy is in the same category with panama lewis"

By that account, then all successful fighters should be accused also. Panama Lewis was caught cheating several times and was notorious for being dirty. I am not putting cheating past anyone. However, at least in baseball, there was a whistle blower that himself used steroids and listed all the players he knew of. He was ridiculed initially until one by one it was proven that he was right. The HUGE difference here is that we are basing these accusations on a claim made by Floyd Mayweather SR., a guy known for both incoherency, great embellishing and coaching a fighter that got knocked cold by Pacquiao after he proclaimed he was the greatest trainer in the world and Pacquiao’s trainer was crap. Give thought to your sources before you assume things are credible. Sr was disgruntled that Pacman handled his fighter so easily, while his son toiled with him for the 1st half of the fight before he started seeing overwhelming success.
And in all fairness, if we are going to start labeling Manny as a cheat due to his accomplishments, then we should accuse all fighters with accomplishments similar. Let’s assume also that De La Hoya used with his success in multiple weight classes; That Trinidad used with his high KO percentage; That Sugar Ray Leonard used with his amazing hand speed and success in multiple weight classes; That the great Henry Armstrong was roided out his a-hole with his astounding record and simultaneous belts in 3 weight classes. Furthermore, let’s also pre-condemn Manny’s contemporary with this declaration: That Floyd Mayweather, the fighter with the undefeated record, extreme stamina, amazing hand speed, and championships in as many weight classes as Manny, is Pacquiao’s needle partner. Let’s assume that on many ocassions, Floyd himself has injected the stuff into Pacquiao’s rear, giving him inside knowledge of Pacman’s alleged PED use.
In retrospect, the critics and cynics all say the baseball drug use should have been obvious. That is because they were destroying…DESTROYING records that stood for decades, and in ways that was uncharacteristic for the same players based on their usual seasons. Going from 40 HR to 70 + towards the end of your career should make you scratch your head.
Again I say, no one can be stated to be absolutely clean without a shadow of doubt in today’s sports age. But as of now, the only blatant assumption I can make is that negotiations fell apart in truth, due to two huge egos, where neither party wanted to concede victory to the other before they stepped in the ring.

PS: I’ve said it once before and I will restate – A young Floyd Mayweather would have destroyed Manny’s recent opposition even more emphatically than Pacquiao. Floyd’s hunger for fighting has been replaced by his hunger for money and desire to remain undefeated and unscathed in all his fights. For example, as much as he thoroughly dominated Juan Manuel Marquez, you think he could have went for the kill. There’s no way Manny dominates a fighter like that round after round and doesn’t go for the KO. And there’s no way a young, hungry Floyd Mayweather does either.
To Intergalactic Planetary (long live HipHop): It’s obvious you didn’t read anything I wrote. If anything I’m a Pacquiao fan. Go read my other posts
To dikkis: the entire post was a stating that these accusations against Pacquiao are unfounded. The first quote was something someone else wrote and the other 3 excessively long paragraphs were a rebuttal of sorts.

American Muscle Cars vs. Japanese Rice Burner. Which will you pick to drive and why?

May 10th, 2010

With the new Fast and Furious movie coming out in 2009, many are hyped about it. As some fans already know, the movie is going to contain both muscles and riced cars. So which will you pick if you got the chance to drive one, and why? Also, what car will you pick?

Muscle Car Definition
"Muscle car is a term used to refer to a variety of high performance automobiles. The term principally refers to American, Australian and to a lesser extent South African models. It generally describes a 2-door rear wheel drive mid-size car with a large, powerful V8 engine, and at an affordable price". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muscle_car

Rice Burner Definition
"Rice burner is a pejorative used initially to describe Asian-made — particularly Japanese-made — motorcycles and automobiles. Many variations have also been used, such as rice rocket for Japanese sport bikes.

More contemporary use of the term rice burner, along with the prefix rice, has taken on an alternate pejorative meaning for an automobile that has been modified to give impression of high performance, but does not necessarily have any high-performance capabilities. This practise is in direct contrast to the ’stealth’ or ’sleeper’ style of automotive modification, where a vehicle may have major performance modifications, but the appearance remains similar to that of a stock model. In this manner, the appellation can apply to any vehicle regardless of country of origin". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rice_burner

was he born in the wrong side of the story?????

May 10th, 2010

asked about what it would mean to tennis history if rog wins 14 slams, andy said this :

"I think when Pete did it, I was a part of that one, too. I think when he did it in ‘02, everyone was saying how kind of lofty of an achievement it was. I don’t know if we thought we would see it any time soon. Little did we know [Roger] was going to start it the next year and go after it.

"I mean, that’s for you guys to do. It feels like two different ‑‑ it’s like my childhood was Pete, and now it’s kind of my grown life is Roger. It’s different, because you view Pete in kind of this ‑‑ I don’t know how to put it.

"I guess Roger is a contemporary of mine which didn’t lessen the affect. I see Pete and Andre and I still get a little jittery. It’s crazy to think it’s come full circle and the magnitude of the numbers he’s accomplished, it’s pretty scary if you sit down and look at them and go through what it takes to accomplish that."

now, i didn’t come up with this, i read in a blog, but it’s interesting:
Interesting that both of those milestones will go right through him if Roger wins on Sunday. Andy couldn’t win a Slam till Pete retired and then the guy who everyone likes to compare to Pete has stopped Andy from winning at least 6 Slams. Two Wimbledon finals, a US Open final, two Australian Open semifinals, a Wimbledon semifinal, and who knows how many just by virtue of Andy never really getting over the 2004 Wimbledon final. And, ironically, for many American fans and the pundits who hyped him to the hilt, Andy was supposed to be the next Pete.
Talk about being born on the wrong side of history.

do you agree??
if you want to read it from the source:

it’s long, i know, but once you read it makes sense.-

What will your obituary say?

May 4th, 2010

My girlfriend just sent me this via e-mail. A life lived well?

U. Utah Phillips, a Grammy-nominated folksinger, rabble-rouser and
anarchist whose wild white beard re-called his years as a tramp, died
of heart disease May 23 at his home in Nevada City, Calif. He was 73.
Phillips, who over four decades on the road combined storytelling with
song, described the plight of the work-ing class, the power of labor
unions and the necessity of direct action. He dubbed himself the
"Golden Voice of the Great Southwest," but his words, more than his
baritone voice, carried authority; he had been a soldier, railroader,
state archivist, union organizer, founder of a homeless shelter and
homeless himself.
He recorded the oft-overlooked value of rubber pockets, a necessity
when stealing soup. His tall tale "Gaffing" was a rich illustration of
populist scams. He honored the likes of Hood River Blackie and Fry Pan
Jack, and never hesitated to leaven his history lessons about the Ford
Strike of 1932, the Spokane Free Speech Fight of 1910 and the Canine
Corps of World War II with such hysterical stories as "Suspender" and
"Blackie & the Duck."
His fans have posted dozens of videos of him or his songs on YouTube;
in the mid-1990s, a new generation discovered him when folk musician
and entrepreneur Ani DiFranco edited about 100 hours of homemade tapes
of his performances and combined them with electronic hip-hop,
creating an album called "The Past Didn’t Go Anywhere" (1996) and
releasing it on her Righteous Babe label.
In 1999, he collaborated with DiFranco on the live album "Fellow
Workers," which was nominated for a 2000 Grammy in the contemporary
folk album category.
"He was a real storyteller in his performances. He was just a
catalogue of people’s history in United States," DiFranco said in an
interview this week. "He was so engaging on many, many levels."
Phillips was a card-carrying member of the Industrial Workers of the
World (Wobblies), a radical union that called for all working people
to unite. He ran, unsuccessfully, for president in 1976 as an
anarchist, but he never voted — except in 2004 when President Bush’s
policies so enraged him, DiFranco said.
"He voted for ‘Not That Guy,’ " she said.
Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, Joan Baez, Tom Waits and Arlo Guthrie
have all sung Utah Phillips songs, but he refused to let Johnny Cash
record his standards, his eldest son told the Sacramento Bee
newspaper, because he didn’t trust the music industry.
The Boston Globe called him "the kind of guy you’d want to sit next to
on a long plane ride. Here’s a rascal with a clutch of good songs
that’ll entertain you, educate you, and probably even get you fired up
over the cur-rent state of politics."
He was born as Bruce Phillips on May 15, 1935, in Cleveland to two
labor organizers. His family moved to Utah in 1947, where Phillips
learned to play the ukulele from an instruction manual, then took to
the roads and rails of the West as a teenager. He adopted the name U.
Utah Phillips in emulation of country vocalist T. Texas Tyler.
"I worked with lots of old drunks only fit to shovel gravel, but they
all knew songs, and they showed me how to play them," he said.
Broke and out of work, he joined the Army in 1956 and was sent to
Korea for three years. "I wanted to learn a trade, but all they taught
me was how to shoot," he said in a Sing Out magazine interview. "What
I really learned in the army was how to be a pacifist."
After his discharge, he began to drink heavily and ride the rails. He
drew a distinction between what he did and those of hobos and bums,
quoting the 19th-century physician to the poor, Ben Reitman.
"A hobo works and wanders, a tramp dreams and wanders, and a bum
drinks and wanders," Phillips told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in
2006. "That’s about right. I tramped. When I was on the freight
trains, I wasn’t looking for work. I was looking to go from place to
place without paying any money."
He took a job with the Utah state archives, and he volunteered at Salt
Lake City’s Joe Hill House, a shelter for tramps and itinerant
workers. His 1968 race for a U.S. Senate seat as the nominee of the
Peace & Freedom Party cost him his state job. He believed he was
blacklisted.
"All I had was an old VW bus, my guitar, , and a head full of
songs, old- and new-made," he wrote two weeks ago in a message to his
local radio station, KVMR-FM. "Fortunately … I landed at Caffe Lena
in Saratoga Springs, New York. That seemed to be ground zero for folk
music at the time. … It took me a solid two years to realize I was
no longer an unemployed organizer, but a traveling folk singer and
storyteller."
In 1973, folk fans discovered his song, "Moose Turd Pie," about the
food served to laborers on a railroad gang. The bluegrass duo Flatt &
Scruggs recorded his train song "Starlight on the Rails," and Joan
Baez became the first of many to record the dark romantic ballad "Rock
Salt and Nails," a song that became something of a folk and country
standard.
He settled in Nevada City, where he helped start the Peace and Justice
Center and the Hospitality House, a homeless shelter. He launched a
100-episode syndicated radio show, "Loafer’s Glory," and made
occasional personal appearances, where he urged audience members to
sing along on such tunes as "Dump the Bosses."
Survivors include his wife, Joanna Robinson of Nevada City; three
children, Duncan Phillips of Salt Lake City, Brendan Phillips of
Olympia, Wash., and Morrigan Belle of Washington; two stepsons,
Nicholas Tomb of Monterey, Calif., and Ian Durfee of Davis, Calif.;
three brothers; a sister; and a grandchild.

Which Judith McNaught books should I read next?

May 2nd, 2010

I have just started reading Judith McNaught’s novels. I wasn’t a romance novel fan, but after reading "Whitney, My Love", "Until You", and "Paradise", I think I can convert.

(I love to read memoirs and biographies, contemporary fiction, YA/teen fiction, and historical references and novels—which is what led me to McNaught’s regency romance, "Whitney, My Love".)

So, I have already read those three books, now which should I read next? I think some books are sequels or prequels to her other books, right? If anyone can help put the books in the order one should read it, I’d be very grateful.

Thank you!

Will you help pop country get their own category.?

April 30th, 2010

Ok people. Here is the letter I was talking about this morning. If you feel that this will benefit both country and pop country participants then please just copy and paste the letter to your email and send it to the link provided. If you like having both genres combined then just exit and go onto the next question. Thanks.

Y/A answer team
With the recent growth in popularity of contemporary, pop-based country music, the country category recieves a high percentage of questions and answers within the genre. Yet two very distinctive types of music are grouped together.
We feel that in all fairness to these young fans, and to the fans of traditional country music, that perhaps the two types would be best seperated. It would be more comfortable for the listeners of recent performers to focus on their preferences, while the fans of classic country and western could discuss songs and artists that are of no interest to those with more modern tastes. Thank you

What's the closest contemporary remake to a WW2 era 1911?

Been looking at 1911s alot lately… I love 1911s. Dare I say, they may be my favorite semi-auto. I love them for their ergos, their caliber, their track record, and their history… Being a fan of the WW2 era 1911, I figured it would be nice if my first 1911 was as original to that as possible.

What’s the closest thing to an 100% true to the design remake of the 1911 that a soldier had in WW2? Stock. That is, STOCK. Not even simple improvements like flared ejection port, beveled mag wells, extended dovetails, NOTHIN… A true blue 1911 with the ugly ass sights and all lol.

Though I’m looking for an "original" 1911 make, feel free to throw in other more modern 1911 feedback if you’d like too.

I'm looking for a romance novel, what should I read?

April 29th, 2010

I’m about to go to the beach and I want to take some new books with me. I’m a big fan of the romance genre: contemporary, paranormal, historical, suspense. Pretty much everything. Some of my favorite romance authors are Lucy Monroe, Lori Foster, Patricia Briggs, Jeaniene Frost, Nora Roberts, Stephanie Meyer, and Sarah McCarthy. I’m not a fan of the harlequin books. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Single title contemporary romance novels?

April 27th, 2010

Any suggestions for a good single title contemporary romance novel? I prefer them to have humor and witty dialogue. Also, I don’t really like explicit sex scenes. Too much detail about them having sex ruins the book for me. I really like novels with themes such as opposites attract or past lovers reuniting.

Also, I am a sucker for sad tear jerkers too. If you have any on your list, then feel free to recommend them.

-I’ve really enjoyed books by Julie James and Paradise by Judith Mcnaught.
-I’ve tried reading books by Susan Elizabeth Phillips but none of them have worked for me.
-And please do not suggest Nicholas Sparks. I wouldn’t be able to get past the first page of any of his books.
-I’m not a big fan of series, especially that teenage targeted Twilight series.

Marilyn Manson fans? :)?

April 24th, 2010

Ok please don’t give me the whole "ahhhh Manson worships the devil" speech. I want serious answers.
What, in your opinion, would be the best Marilyn Manson song to do a dark, gloomy contemporary dance to. And i don’t want his covers of tainted love or sweet dreams.
thanxxxxxx

What are some good piano pieces?

April 23rd, 2010

My favorite pieces are Valse in C# minor and Nocturne in C# minor by Chopin. I need songs that are good for solos and performances. Also, I’m not a very big fan of contemporary pieces xD
Thanks! :)

Are there any other graphic novels that I should add to this list?

April 21st, 2010

I’m currently making a list of writers/artists/comic books/other recommendations for a friend of mine. He’s interested in getting started with the medium as a whole, so no specific "type" of story. I’ve tried to give him some examples across several genres, though I have a huge lack of knowledge in the manga genre of comics. Here’s what I’ve come up with so far. Any further recommendations would be appreciated but please add a bit as far as reasons you found them interesting/worthwhile.

Comic Book Recommendations:
Writers, Artists, Books, Recommendations from Others

Writers:
Warren Ellis (EXCELLENT writer. Authority, Stormwatch, Freakangels it’s all brilliant)
Alan Moore (Sometimes he’s hit and miss for me, I want to read his Swamp Thing)
Kurt Busiek (Not read tons, but liked his superhero stuff. Really keen to try Astro City.)
Garth Ennis (Very gritty/quite violent. Enjoyed Preacher, and War is Hell)
Neil Gaiman (Good stuff. Sandman has some really excellent moments)
Devin Grayson (I’ve enjoyed some of her Batman stuff)
Frank Miller (I’m not a fan of Sin City -though it’s hugely popular – but some of his other stuff is excellent really liked 300)
Grant Morrison (Like his mainstream style such as WE3 better than his "drug induced" writing eg Seaguy, which I thought was pants!)
Mark Waid (I enjoyed his Kingdom Come books)
Chuck Dixon (NOT a fan at all. I avoid books with his name.)
Joseph Loeb (Don’t know him well, have read a couple of his Batman books but he’s decent)
Robert Kirkman ("the zombie guy", has best zombie series written (Walking Dead))
J. Michael Straczynski (Excellent work on Supreme Powers)
Mark Millar (Liked pretty much everything I’ve read of his, especially Jenny Sparks and Red Son)

Artists:
Have enjoyed their artwork to accompany the writers up above.
Dave Gibbons
Frank Quitely
Dave McKean
Steve Dillon
John Cassaday
Tom Raney
Bryan Hitch
Gary Frank

Books:
Stormwatch (first four of the series)
The Authority (First two of the series)
The Walking Dead (probably the best zombie comic series)
Supreme Power (Excellent take on the superhero genre, definitely worth reading)
WE3 (Quite a good story. I think it’s being made into a film)
Superman: Red Son (Superman alternate universe book – very clever, worth owning)
Batman: Year One (enjoyable read even for non-batman fans)
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns ( Buy it, read it, love it… great book)
Maus I & II (serious, moving, and very well written by Art Spiegelman)
Mouse Guard (David Petersen was writer, it’s kid safe, very cute, and well done. Enjoyable read for all ages)
Arkham Asylum (this one is very hit and miss for people. I enjoyed it and it’s well worth having a look at it.)
All Star Superman (To me this is the Dark Knight Returns of the Superman world. Keep your eye on this one. Really enjoyed it)
Recess Pieces (Very funny but gory… Tagline George Romero gave us Night, Dawn and Day of the Dead but what about…. Recess.)
Marvel 1602 (alternate timeline; heroes are born in ‘ye olde England’ rather than contemporary USA)
Year One: Batman/Ra’s Al Ghul (One of the Grayson books I enjoyed)
La Perdida (Not a "happy" book, and the characters aren’t overly likable, but it’s intereating.)
Persepolis (Interesting take and use of the genre. Being made into a film.)

Recommendations from Other Graphic Novel Nuts I know:
Queen and Country by Greg Rucka
Bone (many people recommend this one and I’m keen to have a peek)
100 Bullets (Everyone I’ve talked to loves this one, it’s going to be the next series I purchase)
B.R.P.D. (Supposed to be quite good, but fans of the books don’t generally like the Hellboy Films)
Y The Last Man (Again, supposed to be a good series and I’ve had several people recommend it)
Fables (Read a few of these, enjoyed ‘em. Dunno if that’s enough for me to want to own them)
Concrete (supposedly quirky environmental message – if I remember the recommendation right)

So go for it, I’d love to have a big list for my mate to choose from and I’d love to see what you folks come up with for future recommendations for myself as well.

Cheers,
R

Which phone is the most classy looking? Lg env2 Lg Venus or Lg Dare?

April 20th, 2010

I don’t care about specs, qwerty, cameras, and all the bells and whistles. I care about the overall appearance. Give me your opinions because I am leaning toward the Venus but I still can’t decide.

My Pros:

Env2: Black and silver, smaller than the original brick, qwerty gives it some flirtation and some fun factor overall I give it a 6 out of 10 on the class-o-meter.

Dare: All touch makes it so attractive and sleek, resembles the LG Prada, every time i see it it makes me stop and go hmm wow I give it a 7 out of ten on the class-o-meter [appearance wise]

Venus: The slider feature gives it the flirty fun kind of thing, it is partial touch which makes it high tech which in turn makes it look more classy especially with the mirrored finish and the silver framing. The leather backing screams class and everytime i see it and feel it im like mmm helloooo how you doin [lol] I love the contemporary styling of the black and navy contrast of the checkered buttons and the side plastic part being navy odly enough goes great with the balack scheme and makes it look so great…its weight also feels really classy i give it a 7.5

the cons [in a nutshell this is getting long x-x]

Env2: Calculator looking, the full qwerty makes it a little bulky, numbers are huge and ridiculous, overall qwerty phones IMHO are ugly

Dare: The weight of it makes it feel cheap looking and cheaply made, the qwerty again although touch im not a big fan [yes ive played with all three] also, it seems very very cliche and I like unique things, I don’t see alot of Venus phones out there as much as I see Dares and Env2’s also holding the dare makes me feel like I’m "jones-ing" and thats not at all what im after im just all about feeling and looking good I love fashion and my job allows me to have nice things like designer stuff although I do not go crazy with it…i am due for a new phone adn want one to match my sophisticated eclectic kidn of lifestyle [i hope i dont come off as snooty or B!@#$y because im really not I just like nice things.

Venus:I reall cant complain about it…

But I really want all of your input to give me reasons why you feel one might look classier than the other because I really value your opinions. thats what makes Y!A a great place to be…You might point out something i missed about one so please please give me input :D

Thank you so much!

sane reasons why you should totally vote for Chris Richardson. this isn't a question but read it anyway.?

April 18th, 2010

1.his voice is very versatile and with more practice, he could still produce more exceptional things with his voice

2.he has that certain amount of charisma that lures fans hearts to him. being a crowd favorite, he could very possibly be the next big thing in music even if he doesn’t win Idol(which i hope will not happen).

3.his voice is listener-wise meaning his style is adaptable to the RnB-dominated era of today. he could sell lots of Idols and could possibly be the most successful Idol alumnus in the franchise

4.other contestants of Idol are very great singers but lack that certain modernesque feel that famous singers of today have. now is the new millenium, not the 90’s aka "the diva decade". they could be really karaoke and cabaretish most of the time but Chris is always fresh and tends to glamorize and modernize every song he sings, both new and old. his contemporary style of singing is way better than melinda doolittle’s churchfest.

Help with dance moves?

April 18th, 2010

Here is a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZAEU_B100Q

The quality is not good because I compressed it to upload using my slow internet. What I’m doing is performing for my school before I go back to my country this summer. I’ve NEVER done hip hop performance before, but I wanted to try because if I did my usual contemporary and ballet stuff in a high school, perhaps they might fall asleep. I didn’t post it in the video, but I’m going to do a re-mix type thing with contemporary Chinese fan dance for 1 minute, have a bang, and start the hip hop routine.
